Agrotopia – a living lab for high tech urban and greenhouse horticulture – Presented by Ine Pertry, Inagro at the Vertical Farming Conference, on Jun 27, 2018, at Brightlands Campus, Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands. The conference is part of a two-day agri-food event with 4 conferences, an expo, a 3D Food Printing Masterclass, plus more activities and workshops.
INAGRO is building a research greenhouse on the rooftop of a warehouse of REO Veiling in the city of Roeselare. The greenhouse will demonstrate integration of greenhouse cultivation in urban environments by using resources from the city environment such as energy and water as well as best practices for soilless vegetable production. The greenhouse will also serve as a living lab to exchange knowledge and develop innovations through co-creation, involving all relevant stakeholders in the innovation process. Technology developers will have the opportunity to engage in this co-creation process or to demonstrate their latest innovations in an exhibition room. Creating an Urban Farming Network inspired by Nature – Presented by Felipe Hernandez , Hexagro Urban Farming, at the Vertical Farming Conference, on Jun 27, 2018, at Brightlands Campus, Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
Hexagro Urban Farming’s vision is a future of decentralized food production in urban areas through a sharing-circular economy model that can allow anybody, anywhere grow and access healthy food.
Our first product, the Living FarmingTree (LFT) is a soil-less mini-indoor farm that uses the Aeroponic technique to grow greens efficiently all-year-round without the need of farming experience, complex installations nor time spent in maintenance.
This sustainable solution was developed using Biomimicry; inspired by the Honeybee Hive efficiency in Nature, it allows the minimum inventory with the maximum diversity to provide the best conditions for plant growth while consuming limited water and energy resources. It can be configured in a Tree or in Cubes, to adapt to any space available and different crop-types. Key success factors in designing Indoor Farms – Presented by Martin Veenstra, Certhon, at Vertical Farming Conference, on Jun 27, 2018, at Brightlands Campus, Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
As in the development of “traditional” horticulture, technology plays an important role in growing in Vertical Farms. Thanks to the fully closed nature of the growth environment a holistic approach is required to the entire farming process from seed till harvest. This involves many types of technology like lighting, Climate control, the cultivation system, irrigation and automation. During his presentation Martin will focus on the way Vertical Farming technologies have benefitted from lessons learned in horticulture and the development of recent new technologies and an overview will be given of common pitfalls during the design of Vertical Farms offset against recent technological developments. Commercial Indoor Vertical Farming: Here Today – Presented by Lisa Newman, AeroFarms at the Vertical Farming Conference, which takes place on June 28, 2017, at Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
AeroFarms grows without sun or soil in a fully-controlled indoor environment and has patented aeroponic growing technology for faster harvest cycles, predictable results, and superior food safety with less environmental impact. Thinking holistically from seed to package, we will share how we have taken a systems approach to biology, horticulture, engineering, environmental controls, automation, food safety, and data science to be able to optimize for taste, texture, color, nutrition, and yield.
About Lisa Newman
An expert in fully-automated plant production and phenomics facilities, Dr. Newman previously served as the Head of the Controlled Environments Department for DuPont Pioneer overseeing greenhouse operations for R&D. She holds a B.S. in Biology, a M.S. in Molecular Biology and a Ph.D. in Plant Science from the University of Oxford. Jan Westra, Priva, will speak at Vertical Farming Conference, which takes place on June 28, 2017, at Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
About Jan Westra
Dr. Ir. Jan Westra works at Priva Head Quarters in The Netherlands as Strategic business developer, mainly for complex research and development projects at the cutting edge of horticulture and building technology. His focus areas are America and Europe.
Graduated at the TU Delft in 1985, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Refrigeration and Indoor Air control.
Subsequently did PhD research at the same department, culminating in a thesis in 1990 on the topic: Advanced Absorption Heat Transformer. A thermal device to transform to low grade heat without adding energy flows other than auxiliary power to high grade heat.
After TU Delft Jan Westra worked for more than five years at HE Consultants in Rotterdam, “technical installations in the build environment.” Most of his work involved recommendations for solving the problems with poorly performing HVAC installationa as well as designing systems for special applications (like museums) or in specific climate zones, such as the construction of the Dutch Embassy in Suriname at that time. Stiina Kotiranta, Valoya, will speak at Vertical Farming Conference 2017 about “Quality of light matters in vertical farming”. The conference takes place on June 28, 2017, at Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
Valoya is a Finnish LED light provider for the horticulture industry. Our core business is providing good quality light solutions for closed environments. When choosing the lighting for a vertical farm, one should optimize the light spectrum, light intensity, and photoperiod. The light spectrum affects plant morphology, metabolism, and therefore crop quality. By adjusting the light intensity to the plants’ developmental stage, one can save in equipment and energy costs. All plants need light, but the optimal photoperiod is dependent on the cultivated crop. When designing a vertical farm, one should consider the different aspects of lighting and specify their growth targets; are you looking for maximum yield, color, or perhaps shelf life?
About Stiina Kotiranta
I have been working at Valoya Plant R&D from 2011. My background is in Horticulture (BSc) and in Plant Production Science (Msc). I have also practical work experience from a large scale hydroponic lettuce greenhouse, thus my passion is in food production and of course vertical farming.
Valoya is a provider of LED light for biotech and horticultural purposes. Valoya LED-lights have been developed using Valoya’s proprietary LED technology and extensive plant photobiological research. The wide, patented light spectra offer quality light for plants in an energy efficient way. Valoya spectra enhance photosynthesis and allow control of plant morphology and metabolites.
