Valoya is a Finnish LED light provider for the horticulture industry. Our core business is providing good quality light solutions for closed environments. When choosing the lighting for a vertical farm, one should optimize the light spectrum, light intensity, and photoperiod. The light spectrum affects plant morphology, metabolism, and therefore crop quality. By adjusting the light intensity to the plants’ developmental stage, one can save in equipment and energy costs. All plants need light, but the optimal photoperiod is dependent on the cultivated crop. When designing a vertical farm, one should consider the different aspects of lighting and specify their growth targets; are you looking for maximum yield, color, or perhaps shelf life?

I have been working at Valoya Plant R&D from 2011. My background is in Horticulture (BSc) and in Plant Production Science (Msc). I have also practical work experience from a large scale hydroponic lettuce greenhouse, thus my passion is in food production and of course vertical farming.

Technology in a Vertical Farm/BrightBox – Presented by Peter Korsten, Botany B.V. at the Vertical Farming Conference which takes place on June 28, 2017, at Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
The BrightBox is a research facility specialized on testing out different technical and practical applications surrounding vertical farming. The facility was designed and developed with four partners: Botany BV, Philips, HAS University for Applied Sciences and Province Limburg. This presentation will give quick glimpse inside a real-world vertical farm facility, where we explain all the ins-and-outs surrounding light, climate, nutrition solution and crop growth.

Osram is showcasing LED prototype to promote healthy plant growth
At this year’s Lightfair in Philadelphia (USA), Osram Opto Semiconductors is showcasing an LED prototype to promote healthy plant growth: the Oslon Square Hyper Red. This third-generation 2 watt LED features improved emission characteristics, higher optical output and impressive corrosion resistance, so plant lighting systems based on the Oslon Square Hyper Red can be made particularly economical.
Plants essentially need water and light in order to grow. By using light emitting diodes (LEDs) with different wavelengths, commercial growers are now able to control each individual stage of plant growth. With a wavelength of 660 nanometers (nm) the prototype of the Oslon Square Hyper Red, for example, can control the growth of blossom. Together with the deep blue (450 nm) and far red (730 nm) versions, the Oslon family from Osram Opto Semiconductors perfectly covers the entire spectrum of plant growth. City Farming: Cultivation on a net – Presented by Rene van Haeff, Light4Food at the Vertical Farming Conference which takes place on June 28, 2017, at Villa Flora, Venlo, The Netherlands.
The cultivation of leafy vegetables on a ‘net’, without any additives such as potting soil or rock wool mats makes the system revolutionary and unique. Hereby, the only necessities which have been used are the ‘naked’ seeds which are sown on a ‘net’. Under the ‘net’ is water where the nutrients are offered to the leafy vegetables. Furthermore, the irrigation is conducted with an ebb and flood system. With the LED lighting, the desired light spectrum and intensity for the plant will be given. This is a different approach in cultivating leafy vegetables such as Lettuce baby leaf, Lolo Rosso, and Spinach. It is also possible to grow Herbs as Basel, Arugula, Parsley and Coriander.

With the progress of LED lighting efficiency and the knowledge of light-plant interaction, a better quality control can now be achieved together with improved energy efficiency.
